Technology has made it relatively simple to contact people without ever having to speak to them, whether it’s by texting or by emailing. However, in the business world, there are certain times where business etiquette dictates that a phone call is more effective than an email. So how exactly do you know when it’s more appropriate to call a person than it is to email them?

First of all, always consider the time of day before making a phone call. Be aware of calling too early in the day or too late. If the circumstances require immediate attention, then call. If you get voice mail, leave a message, but also follow up with an email or text letting the person know you’ve left them a voice mail that needs attention. If something is critical, do call again, but be sure you’ve given ample time for them to respond. It’s wise to remember that your emergency may not be their priority.

If you’re trying to make an impression on the person you are contacting, then calling is a better idea as well. That way they will hear your voice and your demeanor, things that can get lost over a text or an email.
