Once you have a job you like, it’s easy to get complacent. However, complacency can be a dangerous state of being because it keeps you out of the job search loop. Even if you’re content with your current position, it’s always wise to think about the next step.

The more prepared you are for the future, the easier it will be for you to brush yourself off and spring to the next stop along your career path.

Here are reasons why Forbes recommends keeping your job search active.

  1. The future. Reading job descriptions, paying attention to salary offerings, and being informed about the job market can help you chart your own course for where you see yourself in 5, 10, or 20 more years.
  2. Open options. Knowing the types of jobs that surface most often, pay the best, are located in your preferred geographic locations, etc., can help you determine which trainings, certifications, or skill sets you want to develop and acquire to make yourself more marketable.
  3. Fall back plan. Loving your job doesn’t translate to job security. The more aware you are, the easier it will be to spring back into job hunting mode should the worst-case-scenario become reality.
