Employment references are necessary for your job search. It’s important that you keep your resume current even if you are not actively looking for another job  and that includes references.

Initiate a conversation with your references at least twice a year to catch up and determine that their contact information is up-to-date and that they are still interested in providing a good reference for you. And remember, your references are doing you a favor, so send a thank-you card and annual greeting card and let your references know you appreciate their support.

Your list of references should be separate from your resume. Your reference list may be included in your initial resume submission and interview, but should most definitely be presented by 2nd interview stage with your prospective employer. Always expect that employment references will be requested. And when they are, re-contact your references to let them know they may be hearing from the company regarding your possible employment.
