In addition to a resume and cover letter, many employers will ask their prospective employees for a job reference or recommendation. Asking a former employer or coworker for a professional reference can be stressful, but there are ways to make it more doable. Here are a few tips to make asking for a job reference easier and ensure you receive as glowing of a reference as possible.

  • Request the reference in writing. Include all of the related information, such as the company’s name to which you are applying, the date the reference letter is due, and where to send it.
  • Ask for the letter early. Give the person from whom you’re requesting the letter at least two weeks, if possible, to write the letter. This increases the likelihood that you’ll receive a well-planned letter instead of one written at the last minute.
  • Include a copy of your resume with your request. This way, the letter writer will be able to reference past experiences of yours when writing the reference. You’ll decrease the likelihood of conflicting information appearing in your letter and resume because of someone’s faulty memory.
