Making a good first impression on a new job begins and ends the first week, according to etiquette expert Diane Gottsman. Use your orientation time to let co-workers (and your employer) know you’re a good fit. Here’s how:

  • Be proactive - Introduce yourself with a friendly smile. This is the time to build good working relationships and to learn what performance expectations your manager and co-workers have regarding your employment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially if you don’t completely understand something.
  • Organize - Even if you were provided with an employee handbook, create your own notebook for important information and to-dos. Get your work area coordinated and begin familiarizing yourself with the equipment you’ll be expected to use. You also may need department codes for faxes, etc. Gather this information the first week.
  • Stay healthy - You’d be surprised how physically and mentally exhausting that first week will be. Don’t skip meals and devote a specific amount of time every day to exercise and relaxation.
