Career and Management adviser Robert Half says job essential skills can make or break you in the competitive job-hunting market. While some skills will always be important (communication, for example), others, like social media, are relatively new and rising stars that have captured companies’ interests.

  1. Communication - Being able to write well is becoming increasingly important because fewer are able to do it. Another valuable skill is being able to “read” body language and convey your own good body language.
  2. Technology - If you are not proficient in the most popular software and instant messaging office applications, ask your staffing professional about free training opportunities.
  3. Social Media - Knowing the proper use of social media is now a critical networking, and marketing tool that most companies employ. Keep your posts professional and non-controversial; you don’t know who’s “following” you on Facebook!
  4. Multitasking - One-person-one-job days are long gone; employees are expected to effectively juggle several jobs at the same time.
  5. Collaboration - Together Everyone Achieves More! Teamwork skills continue to be essential at work.
